A stairlift is a device that is attached to a staircase to transport an individual up and down the stairs. To use a stairlift, one must be able to safely transfer in and out of the stairlift’s seat and remain in the upright position through the duration of the ride. All stairlifts are equipped with seat belts to assist with balance and safety.
101 Mobility offers a variety of straight rail stairlifts from the industry’s leading manufacturers, each with a range of additional features and add-on options. We offer free in-home stairlift consultations, where on of our expert Mobility Consultants will help you determine which model is best suited for your specific needs.
Contrary to popular belief, stairlifts are mounted directly into the stair treads, rather than into the wall beside the staircase. This means that regardless of whether you have an open staircase or railings on both sides, your staircase is still compatible with a stairlift unit.
There are different types of stairlifts to suit the wide range of staircases. Straight indoor stairlifts are the most common type of stairlifts. They are meant for use on any indoor staircase without any turns, curves, or landings.
Stairlifts can be modified to fit nearly any staircase length. Professional installers may need to add additional rail sections or trim existing rail sections to ensure a proper fit with your staircase.
Stairlifts are available in a range of widths depending on the user’s needs. Most stairlifts require only about 29″ of space, which can be easily accommodated by modern staircases.
When not in use, the seats, arm rests, and foot rests fold flat against the wall to maximize the usable staircase space.
Indoor stairlifts from 101 Mobility are battery-powered, but require access to a basic 110v outlet in order to recharge the unit’s battery. In the event of a power outage, a fully-charged stairlift will continue to run for a period of time ranging from hours to days until the stored charge is exhausted. The exact period of time varies depending on make, model, age, and frequency of use.
In order to allow the user to safely access the stairlift’s chair at the bottom of the staircase, the unit’s railing must extend out past the bottom step. Depending on your home’s layout, this piece of railing may interfere with traffic in a hallway or a door at the bottom of the staircase. To address this potential hazard, all straight stairlifts offered have a folding-rail add-on option.
There are a variety of different folding rail styles, but each serves the same purpose. Folding rails may be manual or automatic – 101 Mobility’s expert Mobility Consultants will assist you in selecting the best rail style to maximize safety and utility of your stairlift.
When your stairlift is installed, our Mobility Specialists will discuss operation methods with you to determine where to place the controller. To operate your stairlift, simply press the button or rocker switch on the unit’s arm rest.
101 Mobility’s stairlifts also come standard with a call/send switch, which is mounted on the wall near the bottom of the staircase. An additional switch may be added at the top of the staircase. This switch enables multi-user households to access the unit when necessary, and also provides a means to send the stairlift’s chair to a different position on the staircase and out of the way when not in use.
Stairlift seats can swivel to enable safer transitions at the top of the staircase. Depending on the user’s abilities, you may prefer to add a power swivel seat feature, which will automatically turn the seat rather than requiring the user to do so manually. Our expert Mobility Consultants will speak with you during your free home consultation to determine which seat style is best for your needs.
101 Mobility offers straight indoor stairlifts from a variety of top-quality manufacturers. Each make and model has a different aesthetic, and you may find that you prefer the look and feel of one type.
Furthermore, indoor stairlifts have different customization options. Depending on the make and model, your stairlift may be available with different seat color and fabric options as well as rail color options. Our Mobility Consultants will address any concerns about stairlift aesthetics to find the best option to enhance your home’s decor.
